Reining

To Reing a horse is not only to guid him, but also to direct his
every movement. The best reining horse should be willingly guided through a set
of complex maneuvers, with litlle or no apparent resistance.

Starting Endurance & Strength Conditioning

I'm starting to keep track of what I'm doing with Mars & Pretty during the winter. Our usual workout don't work anymore because our outdoor arena is covered in snow and ice and the nearest indoor arena is at least 15 miles away and you have to pay to ride indoors.

So what I'm doing is taking Mars and Pretty out on the gravel roads for a couple mile jogs. I usually ride Mars and pony Pretty beside him. I put both their winter blankets on so that they are warm, but still burn some fat off (especially Mars). I tie a lead rope to Pretty and then tie the other end around Mars' neck so that I don't have to hold on to her. Pretty doesn't know how to do an extended jog so we will be working on that while out on the roads.

Now where I live is surrounded by gravel roads, which is great because then I get to take them out and get them used to stuff. The only downside is that we can't lope much because of the ice, so we keep to jogging and trotting in order to build endurance and muscle.

Mars is in pretty good shape, just doubled in size because of all the winter fur. Pretty on the other hand is not in very good shape. You'd think that with all the reining she does during the summer that she'd be in better shape, but she's not. So this jogging is an energy outlet for Mars and a shape buster for Pretty. Let's see how they do!
