December 26, 2009:
I'm starting to keep track of what I'm doing with Mars & Pretty during the winter. Our usual workout don't work anymore because our outdoor arena is covered in snow and ice and the nearest indoor arena is at least 15 miles away and you have to pay to ride indoors.
So what I'm doing is taking Mars and Pretty out on the gravel roads for a couple mile jogs. I usually ride Mars and pony Pretty beside him. I put both their winter blankets on so that they are warm, but still burn some fat off (especially Mars). I tie a lead rope to Pretty and then tie the other end around Mars' neck so that I don't have to hold on to her. Pretty doesn't know how to do an extended jog so we will be working on that while out on the roads.
Now where I live is surrounded by gravel roads, which is great because then I get to take them out and get them used to stuff. The only downside is that we can't lope much because of the ice, so we keep to jogging and trotting in order to build endurance and muscle.
Mars is in pretty good shape, just doubled in size because of all the winter fur. Pretty on the other hand is not in very good shape. You'd think that with all the reining she does during the summer that she'd be in better shape, but she's not. So this jogging is an energy outlet for Mars and a shape buster for Pretty. Let's see how they do!
December 27, 2009 (4 miles):
It was a cold day, but Mars' temper was hot. In our 4 mile jog, he reared up 8 times, just throwing his usual temper tantrums. Pretty was a little on the slow side and after 2 ½ miles, she wanted to walk the rest of the way. Mars kind of pulled her along and every time she slowed down and he had to pull her, he got mad. Pretty has to keep up with Mars and that's hard for her because he's so much more bigger and more energy. Poor girl.
December 29, 2009 (4 miles):
I took Mar & Pretty out a a 4 mile jog today. Started out slow and worked into an extended trot for 2 miles and back down to slow. Pretty was having a hard time keeping up with Mars and by the 3rd mile just wanted to walk home. I have a feeling that this is going to get really repetitive with her.
December 31, 2009 (4 miles):
Today was a bit better and Pretty didn't get tired as fast this time and Mars just get going & going. Pretty kept getting ahead of Mars today and he doesn't like that very much. He's the leader, not her. Although she does have to test that every once in a while.
The only problem with riding on the road is that people don't really respect you very much, so when a truck came blaring up behind us, Pretty jumped and snorted at it, but Mars didn't pay any attention to it at all.
Reining
To Reing a horse is not only to guid him, but also to direct his
every movement. The best reining horse should be willingly guided through a set
of complex maneuvers, with litlle or no apparent resistance.

Introducing......
My new blog! This will be a blog that will follow my 2 horses, Pretty Little Maximus "Pretty" and God of War "Mars". This will follow their training, showing and various other things that I feel like blogging about. I will put up some histories for Mars & Pretty, as I'm sure that people will want to know where they came from, their backgrounds and other stuff like that. Hope you enjoy!
